Their community driven systems are a great example of producer led innovation around soil health and cost reduction for farmers. The group has nearly transitioned entirely away from chemical fertilizers. Producers don’t use any pesticides or herbicides, opting instead for biodynamic and regenerative practices.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis reserve lot comes from a selection of farmer-members of Los Guacharos. While each producer has their own techniques, they are all harvesting cherries at peak ripeness, depulping them, and then allowing to ferment for a period of time before washing. Finally, they are dried on raised beds or patios with shade cloth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis lot is made up 100% of Pink Bourbon. Many producers in the Los Guacharos cooperative, as well as others in Colombia, have been planting more pink bourbon, a variety that emerged in Huila in the 1980s. What’s special about pink bourbon? With its orangey pink ripe cherries, it’s thought to be a hybridized cross of red and yellow bourbon. Recent research might indicate that it is actually more closely related to Ethiopian landraces. Practically speaking, producers find it to be disease resistant, high yielding, and low maintenance. At the same time, it produces a unique and exciting flavor profile with high cup quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is our ninth year being able to offer Los Guacharos in our lineup and the third offering of a pink bourbon community lot. He was one of the first to establish coffee production in this mountainous community. He grows and processes a handful of varieties, including this yellow caturra, on his farm, Finca El Roble. Felipe is a part of the leadership team of El Morito as the warehouse manager. El Morito started as a family company, but formalized as an association in 2022 and now serves to assist all of its producers with use of shared infrastructure, aggregation, and export, while encouraging autonomy in processing. Felipe also operates a guinea pig farm at El Roble, just one creative way to develop a more diversified and sustainable livelihood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis El Roble lot is yellow caturra variety. Caturra is fairly common. Despite being discovered in Brazil, it really gained popularity elsewhere in Central and South America because its smaller plant size made it easy to plant and harvest in high elevations on steep terrain. Red caturra is more well known, but occasionally a mutation results in yellow fruit. Their guerilla father Abalulesa had a bounty placed on him by the communist Derg regime. After his death, when Musa was only 2, the family was awarded amnesty and land, which is now Musa’s coffee farm. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMusa and his two brothers operate their own small farms in Gomma. He purchases and processes coffee cherry from 21 nearby smallholders in addition to his own. He farms organically and incorporates honey bees and crops like avocados. Musa and his brother Mustefa produce seeds to supply government seed banks. This diversification is important for his farm and livelihood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is difficult to maintain traceability on small farms in Ethiopia and direct market access for growers is rare. In 2006, Musa won a government competition and was awarded a hand pulper and cash, which he used to expand his farm. He found success in direct markets. However in 2008, the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange forced producers to sell to commercial markets for lower prices. Eight years later, export policy changes allowed direct market access again. Musa benefits from higher premiums which he is reinvesting in farm improvements like new seed-stock, shade structures, and additional drying beds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis coffee is unique on our menu - we haven’t had many offerings from this area of the country. Jimma is known as the origin of the coffee species. This lot from Musa Abalulesa is comprised of specific JARC (Jimma Agricultural Research Centre) variety selections which are improved cultivars developed from local and regional heirlooms.
